1994, Pulau Sipadan, Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia — A turtle skeleton and skull in Turtle Tomb in the coral reef of the tiny 20 acre island of Pulau Sipadan in the Celebes Sea, north east of Borneo. Sipadan is the only deep water off-shore island of Malaysia and is covered with tropical rain-forest. The island plays host to an unusually diverse array of marine life due, in part, to its deep coral reef. Turtles are abundant and crawl up onto the beaches at night to lay eggs. Turtle Tomb was discovered by Jacques Yves Cousteau and is covered with turtle copses. Turtles swim into the cavern system of the coral reef to escape predators and to sleep: often they cannot find their way out of the labyrinth and drown. — Image by © Lawson Wood/CORBIS
